THE ART OF AI FOR ALL – The connective power of culture and media

This report by the Netherlands AI Coalition (NL AIC), founded to encourage Dutch AI activities, looks at the potential of AI applications in the culture and media sectors. The report considers both 1) how AI is transforming the culture and media sectors (AI for culture), as well as 2) how culture and media is providing insights and spurring innovation around the potential of AI in other application areas (Culture for AI). The report takes into account the role of AI technology as a disruptive force for democratic institutions and social welfare, as well as a vector of influence by large international tech companies; it calls for wider participation by the public in its growth and adoption. Consulting many stakeholders from the sector, the report focuses specifically on the role of AI in 1) production, 2) distribution and reception, 3) diversity, 4) ethical and legal preconditions, and 5) value creation and earnings capacity. The report also looks into major challenges for the sector, illustrated using real-world use cases and which include developing value-driven, open and responsible AI systems built upon European values, as well as how to support Dutch culture and media organisations economically.
