The European music ecosystem finds itself at a pivotal crossroads of opportunities and challenges in the 21st century. Emerging technologies, particularly AI, and the dominance of technology-driven platforms have reshaped the production, distribution, and consumption of music. These forces, while unlocking new creative and commercial opportunities, also pose significant risks, including power consolidation, reduced artistic agency, and inequities in access to resources and audiences. As a result, the need for open, collaborative, and inclusive structures within the European music ecosystem has never been more urgent.
Join us at Tallin Music Week on Thursday, 3 April 2025 where we will be exploring strategies to reinforce the European music ecosystem, emphasising open innovation that empowers artists, strengthens intermediaries, and leverages AI and other emerging technologies for collective benefit. Together, we aim to propose recommendations to create a resilient and dynamic ecosystem that is able to compete globally and increase the sector’s cultural, social, and economic impact.
Key questions that this policy lab will explore include:
How can revenue-sharing models on streaming platforms be changed or restructured to ensure fair compensation for independent artists?
What policies or initiatives can enhance the discoverability and visibility of independent artists in algorithm-driven environments dominated by major labels?
What innovative business models can be developed to reduce dependency on digital platforms while fostering collaboration and inclusivity within the European music ecosystem?
How can innovative business models and technological advancements be leveraged to enhance audience engagement and foster the development of diverse, inclusive, and sustainable audiences?
What strategies can be implemented to foster cross-sector collaboration (e.g., between music, technology, education, and urban development) and create a resilient, inclusive, and innovative European music ecosystem?
