VENUE:

Online

TIME:

February 18th 2025, from 11:00am – 1:00pm CET

DESCRIPTION:

Join the European Cultural and Creative Industries Innovation Policy Platform (ekip) in this webinar where we will discuss the future of the music industry and its platformisation.

About this webinar

Platformisation is “the penetration of digital platforms’ economic, infrastructural, and governmental extensions into the cultural industries, as well as the organization of cultural practices of labor, creativity, and democracy” (Poell et al., 2022).

The platformisation of music has democratized distribution but flooded platforms with content, favoring major labels and leaving most artists struggling. Streaming has eroded middle-class earnings, while AI and algorithms often confine growth to national markets. Diversification into social audio, such as live audio discussions and community interactions, and short videos is growing, but sustainable revenue models remain a key challenge. Despite these challenges, data-driven insights and evolving platform services offer new opportunities for artists and labels.

Webinar Agenda

  • 11:00 – 11:30 – Trend forecasting presentation

In the first part of the webinar, the social media listening and trend forecasting on the platformisation of the music industry within the context of ekip will be presented. An overview of findings will be provided, followed by the presentation of one trend derived from this analysis.

  • 11:30 – 12:00 – Scenarios presentation

In the second part of the webinar, we will present an overview of the topic, and the interpretation ekip is giving to it.

  • 12:00 – 13:00 – Collective Discussion (Policy Corner)

In the third part, an interactive discussion with webinar participants will be facilitated, focusing on four scenarios for the platformisation of the music industry to be collectively discussed.

Target Audience

  • Practitioners and representatives involved in music-focused research and innovation projects or interested in exploring how platformisation is reshaping the music industry and driving societal transformation.
  • Policy makers at regional and local levels engaged in fostering sustainable and inclusive cultural practices through policies that address the challenges and opportunities of digital music platforms.
  • Civil society stakeholders and community leaders passionate about promoting equitable and sustainable transitions, particularly by supporting local music ecosystems and connecting cultural diversity with global digital trends.
  • Artists, producers, and educators aiming to bridge the gap between music creation and platform innovation through interdisciplinary collaboration and emerging business models.
