Europeana Initiative is an ecosystems of organisations working towards a digital infrastructure that enables the sharing and reuse cultural heritage data. It serves as a great example of how public organisations can pool resources to develop digital services that benefit the entire field as well as other sectors. The ecosystem has developed:

  • A public portal that provides access to over 60 million heritage items
  • Shared vocabularies and digital workflows that enables heritage organisations to aggregate their data
  • A catalogue of APIs that enable anyone to build new services based on the cultural heritage data
  • An extensive catalogue of training activities

Europeana Initiative is also the foundation for the Common European data space for cultural heritage – one of the 14 strategic data spaces established by the European Union flagship to accelerate data sharing.
